Au Pair Scam Warning
Stay vigilant and don’t fall victim to a scam.
Unfortunately, unscrupulous people exist in all walks of life and this includes nanny and au pair matching websites. Totalnannies is not an au-pair or nanny matching site. All host families on our website have been personally screened and verified and are genuine. However, if you do use a au pair matching website there is much you can do to watch out for these people and report their behaviour.
Never Send a Host Family or Au Pair Agent Cash
Never send cash, cheques, moneygram payments of payments by Western Union. Money should never exchange hands before meeting and if you are asked for money at any time, then be aware that the person asking may not be genuine.
Common Au Pair Scams
A common scam is when a host family email an au pair accepting their services and sending them a (false) cheque for their travel. A little while later, they cancel the agreement with a plausible excuse and ask the au-pair to return the money by wire, often via Western Union. This scam particularly seems to be generated in the Cameroon and Nigeria at present.
Another less common rouse is for a family to ask the applicant to deal direct with their own (bogus) travel agent. The agency may seem genuine and ask all kinds of travel details and then request a down-payment to be sent. This again is a complex scam and you should not be taken in. You will not hear from the agent, the family or your money again. Another common scam is for a family to ask for payment for the visa processing application.
Things to Watch Out For:
- Beware of any offers which seem to offer much more than the standard rate – they are often not genuine.
- Beware of any communication where you are not convinced by the questions. ie, the questions are of a too personal nature or concentrate too much on money. Genuine applicants and families will ask many natural questions which will be often followed up by further emails and telephone calls. Question an offer that is made too quickly.
- Beware of anyone who is not able or very unwilling to provide background documentation such as photos, references etc.
- Always check references.
- Beware of families who state that they are English and live in London but write in terrible English.

We are aware of several emails inviting au pairs to visit Nigeria or other countries. Normally these tell you that your profile matches the family's requirements. You will then be sent several official looking documents and asked to submit a visa fee via Western Union, or similar, along with lots of personal information and a copy of your passport. If you read the news you will know that Nigeria is not a safe country to visit, and we also recommend that you never send off any money. The forms we have seen, although appearing official, do not have any contact details at all for a Government Department in question. This should make you very suspicious.
If a family, or someone pretending to be a family:
- Asks you for money;
- Introduces you to a third party (a travel agent, for example) who asks you for money;
- Tells you they will help you with visas and/or work permits but that you will need to deal through a contact of the family, who after doing some 'work' 'for you' then asks you for money;
- Is unable to provide references that you can check;
- Seems to make everything happen too quickly, and makes you feel that you are being rushed in to making a decision;
- Appears to be offering you much more pocket money than you were expecting;
- Offers working conditions that sound 'too good to be true', such as world-wide travel and a car;
- Provides incomplete or inconsistent information, or:
- Makes you feel at all unsure or uncomfortable.
Then we strongly recommend that you:
Do not send them any money, and
Do not travel to be an au pair with that family.
We always recommend that you check some references for the family by speaking to a previous au pair if possible, and perhaps one of the teachers of the children, for example. You should check that the reference is genuine by, in the case of a teacher for example, telephoning on a number that is published for the school in a directory or on the school's web site. Then you can check that you are speaking to the genuine teacher, and that this teacher knows the family.
If a family introduces you to what they tell you is a 'travel agent' or similar, please be very careful. If the agent is bogus they could disappear with your money. This is why we recommend that you make your own travel arrangements with an agent or airline that you know is genuine.
If you receive an unsolicited email from an au pair/nanny promotion, or anyone else, telling you that you have won some money but need to make a payment to release the funds, we recommend that you do not respond to the email, and do not send any money.
Au Pairs
. Please be very careful, and be particularly cautious where a job offer sounds very good, and/or you are asked by the family, or by the family's travel agent to part with any money for visas, work permits, or travel arrangements.

DURATION

WAGES

your duties will be to take the kids to school and bring them back home, if you
can drive then you will drive them to and fro or you wait for the bus to bring

During School- you will take them to school around 8am and you will bring them
back around 4pm, you will be free from 8am-4m.

contact the Uk immigration services with the e-mail address they will tell you
what and what you need to present to procure your documents for you, and the
contact person there is Sir Charles Freeman.
Please always get back to me with every informations you received from the
immigration services because i need to monitor it here with you so that you have
your documents on time. I am sure that they will get you the Visa and
workpermits in five working days because i am going to present my bank
statement, taxe clerance and other relevants documents i need to back you up as
your employer. Please remember that these documments are so immiportant to me so
much and without these documents they will not allowerd me to get your work
permits as your employer.
Go through your employment letter very well to see the tearms and regulations
that you have to take care of the expenses your self and make sure that every
payment you make to the immigration services you have the receipt kept because
you will come along with it when coming to Uk i will pay back to you all the
expenses you make after five working days of your resumption. The kids sends
there regards to you and looking forward to have you as there nanny. Infact my
lawyer told me that this Employment aletter was sent to you before and you
refused to contact the immigration services.

1-Supervise breakfast with the children in the morning and get them off to

4-Prepare and cook an evening meal for everyone at about 6.30-6.45 Up to two

6-Occasional weekend work would be offered by prior negotiation.
I normally leave for work at 7.00am and get back at around 6.30pm although some
flexibility is useful.
